Edible Glitter is so easy to make and you only need two ingredients.
We love glitter in our house and now you can make your own and even better…eat it!!!
When I told the kids we were going to make edible glitter, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them so excited before. They were still in their jammies and I think they thought all of their birthday’s had come at once! Glitter you can eat, no way mum!!
I make this all the time for my Craftea Parties to use as a cupcake or cookie decoration. You can make it in advance of doing some baking or of a party and save it in little containers. It stores really well for a couple of weeks.
All you need is sugar/caster sugar and food colouring.
I like to make loads of different colours at the same time and then I store them to use later.
Mix together a few tablespoons of sugar with one or two drops of food colouring in a bowl. If you want to make a pastel colour, like a light pink only add a teeny drop of red. The more food colouring you add the stronger the colour of the sugar will be.
You will need to use the back of the spoon to press down on the sugar to really get the food colouring to mix well.
When you are happy that it is mixed well (it shouldn’t be too wet), pour your mixture onto a small strip of tin foil.
Now place the tin foil on a tray and put in a low oven 30-50 degrees for ten minutes.
When you take it out of the oven you will notice that it has slightly hardened.
I store my glitter in these cute mini plastic tubs that I bought in Dealz. You get 6 for €1.49, bargain! You might need to use a spoon to break up any hard bits that have formed. It should be as smooth as normal sugar after it’s cooked.
You can use your edible glitter for so many things.
Decorating Cupcakes-why not have a cupcake decorating party?
or decorate some cookies. You could make a really fun beach scene with the edible glitter-stick in an umbrella and voila!!
